Why I Quit

Once upon a time, I made fonts.  A lot of them.  I had a great deal of free time, I was single, I didn’t have much of a social life outside of work, and so I spent a lot of time in front of my Mac, cranking out fonts.

Then I came back to Minnesota from Philly, wound up working, having a social life again, and was dating, and thus, less time, so my output slowed.  Chank invited me to be part of the second ChankArmy, and I learned a ton, and I worked on honing my craft.

Then I started seeing my fonts on things, and it was cool.  One of them showed up on the cover of a porn video, I started seeing them on websites, and then I saw one on the back of a No Fear shirt.  They hadn’t paid to license the font, and I reached out to them to discuss it — not asking for a the license fee, but asking them to comp me a free shirt.  By their reaction, you’d think I’d asked them to stomp on a puppy.  And then I started seeing my fonts on those CD-ROMs of “1001 Fonts” and so on, and was infuriated that some other schmuck was making money off of my hard work.

And that was kinda it for me, for awhile.  I was disheartened, and kinda disgusted by the font business for awhile.  I kept sketching ideas from then on, but I didn’t really make an effort to take them to completion anymore.  I kept studying, though, and kept pen to notebook, hammering out ideas, and every so often, I’d take a crack at designing a new site.  But mostly, this site was just ignored.  I renewed the domain name every year, and when I did, I’d think about getting the site going again.

Last fall, something in me clicked.  I started pursuing creative ventures again.  Life started getting less complicated — the kids were getting easier to take care of, work started going really well, and I started to claim time for myself again.

So now I’ve been sketching and studying, and actively planning a comeback for this site.  I’m applying my WordPress knowledge to build myself a custom setup, with custom functionality, and will be getting it up and online over the course of the next few months.

Expect more soon.

Hello world!

So yeah, it’s coming back, y’all.  You might not even know Fontosaurus as a source of free fonts — I was doing most of my work from 1998 to 2005-ish, and then went dormant after some shit went down.  I made a few attempts to rally and bring this back, but never really felt strongly about it.  Something clicked in me this month, and I decided to get my shit together and get this thing going again. I’ve been scribbling and sketching fonts since 2005 and it feels like a good time to get them out into the world.

Over the next few months, I’ll be updating the look and feel of this site, putting some of my older fonts on here as free downloads, and working to get some of my newer works out there for your consideration.

Stay tuned.
